Implant Dentistry

Dental implants act as anchors to hold in crowns, bridges, and dentures. At Premier Dental we use 3-D imaging to plan your implant placement ensuring a safe and ideal position. With 3-D imaging available in-office you do not need to worry about being referred to a hospital for a CAT scan or relying on a “guestimate” with the accuracy of your implant placement.

Our office offers 2 types of implants for different patient situations:

The first type of implant is made out of titanium and looks like a “post” that fits into the space where the root of your tooth used to be. The implant is placed under local anesthesia and there is typically little post-operative discomfort. Once placed, the bone is allowed to osseointegrate, or attach, to the implant providing stability. After this occurs the replacement tooth (crown, bridge, or denture) is connected to the implant. The new tooth or teeth look, feel, and perform just like natural teeth!

Implants help to support the bone in the area of the missing tooth/teeth to prevent bone loss and mobility to the surrounding teeth and maintain facial support of your cheek and lips. Choosing implants over bridgework takes away the need to grind down healthy teeth on either side of the missing tooth/teeth. Implants can restore your confidence to smile, laugh, speak clearly, and eat your favorite foods.

The second, the MDI or mini-implant System, consists of small titanium implants which are placed into the jaw where the tooth roots used to be and attach to the patient’s denture. The head of the implant is round like a ball and fits into a “socket” that is placed in the base of the denture. Neither piece is visible while wearing the denture. The implant fixtures allow for stability while the denture continues to rest on the gums. No more need for messy denture pastes and creams!

The ideal patient for mini-implants have struggled with dentures for years and have little bone remaining in their ridge making them ineligible for traditional implants. Placement of mini-implants is practically painless and requires minimal anesthesia. Placement typically takes about an hour and requires no scalpels or sutures! Patients on blood thinners do NOT need to stop their medications making this a very safe procedure. The patient’s denture is then adjusted to “snap onto” the mini-implants. Patients are able to eat a light meal about an hour after they are placed. Mini-implants allow patients to talk, chew, and smile with confidence!
